Born in Nanjing, China in the sixties, Han Feng was raised in Hangzhou, China’s artistic center, and graduated there from the China Academy of Fine Arts. From childhood, Feng developed a keen appreciation for the things “she could feel but not easily see”: the color, fluidity of design, craftsmanship, symbolism, and fabrics of her heritage. Seeking a larger stage for her interests, in 1985 she moved to New York. Creativity and talent, coupled with a passion for practicality and fun, took her from there.

Han Feng was, from the start, about elegant, simple, stylish designs for her customers. She began her career with a collection, of now signature, pleated scarves. Her first ready-to-wear collection was presented in 1993 to critical acclaim and, since then, her work has attracted a world class client list.

Recently, film director, Anthony Minghella, invited Han Feng to design the costumes for his original staging of Madama Butterfly which premiered to great acclaim at the English National Opera in November 2005. The “coloristic riot" of Han Feng’s “ravishing costumes” garnered rave reviews and considerable press from international critics. Similar publicity and acclaim for Han Feng and her designs met her when Madama Butterfly opened the New York Metropolitan Opera’s 2006 season for a four month run. Partly as the result of Han Feng’s talent, Madama Butterfly won the UK’s prestigious Olivier Award for Best Opera of 2005. Han Feng’s accomplishments in design were also selected for celebration by the Kennedy Center during last summer’s ground breaking Festival of China. She has also been singled out for distinction by the Cooper Hewitt’s National Design Triennial for 2006 with an installation presenting Han Feng’s fashion design including significant attendant publicity expected to begin in November 2006.
